Wildlife
Ketchikan offers ample opportunities to view the fascinating wildlife and marine creatures that populate our forests and seas. Bald eagles and ravens can be viewed just about anywhere in town, look for them perched everywhere from tree tops to church steeples. Flightseeing and day boat excursions will increase your chances of spotting migrating whales, deer, bear and marine life such as sea lions. Numerous migratory birds visit Ketchikan- our annual Rufous Hummingbird celebration in April welcomes the start of spring migration with a three day line up of speakers, bird walks and other birder activities. Salmon return by the thousands to area streams and creeks to spawn and are commonly seen leaping completely out of the water. Salmon streams, particularly in more remote areas are also likely spots for viewing bears and eagles since the returning fish are a major food source during the summer.
Beach combing, particularly at low tide offers a glimpse of the colorful and unusual sea life residing in and around the water. Diving and snorkeling adventures will enhance your view of Ketchikan’s marine life.
Hiking, camping and other activities within the Tongass National Forest offer additional wildlife viewing and birding opportunities during your visit.
