Wildlife
Besides being home to the largest gathering of eagles in the world in the fall, Haines is also well-known for its abundant wildlife. Several hundred eagles are residents year-round sharing Haines with 260 other species of birds. On or near the water, be sure to keep your eyes open to sight seals and porpoises as well as humpback and orca whales breaking the surface of the ocean waters. Opportunities abound to see bears in their natural habitat along mountain lakes and streams, harbor seals playing in the mouth of a river during salmon runs, and eagles soaring overhead as they survey their snow-capped mountain home.
A variety of excursions on the water, hiking, or touring will optimize your opportunities for seeing bears, moose, mountain goats and all the other creatures that have made Haines a wildlife haven.
