Wildlife

Like most communities in southeast we have quite a variety of wildlife.  About the only critter we don’t have here are moose.  Yet, you can boogie down the Lynn Canal to Haines drive north towards Whitehorse on the Klondike highway for that.   We have resident black and brown bears.  They are even seen in town.  Outside of town you can find all sorts of other critters.  A sampling would include Marmots, weasels, porcupines, wolf, coyotes etc….. When a fish called the Hooligan run in May it’s easy to spot humpback and orca/killer whales out in the bay.  Humpies are seen year round but they’re more evident in May and September.  Our local seal population can be found near the city docks and the ocean approach to Dyea.  Waterfowl include Bald Eagles, ducks, geese, terns and in the spring blue herons and trumpeter swans.  Obviously there’s more than those but I felt like highlighting a few of them.  You can learn more about bear management and their habits by contacting the National Park Visitor Center, the Skagway Visitor Center, and Chilkoot Trail HQ out in Dyea or from knowledgeable locals.
