Sitka was the Capital of Russian America.

The transfer of Alaska from Russia took place in Sitka in 1867.

Sitka was the district Capital until 1906.

The only dormant volcano in all Southeast, Mt. Edgecumbe, is near Sitka.

The largest town geographically in the country is Sitka (4,710 square miles!)

O’Connell Bridge linking Sitka to Japonski Island is the first and only suspension bridge in Alaska and opened in 1970.

Sitka is the 5th largest city by population in the state. Sheldon Jackson Museum was the first concrete building in Alaska and opened in 1897.

Among all the cities in Southeast, Sitka has the highest King Salmon salt water catch rate. (catch rate is the length of time it takes to hook a fish).

Sitka was the birthplace of the Alaska Native Brotherhood.
