Wrangell, the Gateway to the Stikine River, is a gem waiting to be discovered. Adventure can be yours whether it is exploring the Stikine River, flying over the snow-capped coastal range and glaciers, fishing for the big one, or visiting Anan Bear Observatory for an upclose bear experience. Wrangell Island is in the heart of the Tongass National Forest surrounded by islands, mountains, rivers and beauty that will astound the visitor. Although the town is small, recreational opportunities abound and visitors are treated as one of our own. Known for its friendliness, the community will welcome you and help you in any way. Lodges, hotels and outstanding bed and breakfasts will make your stay comfortable. Downtown Front Street has clothing stores, gift shops and galleries, and restaurants with varied menus to satisfy any cravings, especially for the local seafood fare. Mingle with the locals, play a round of golf, or shop for that perfect gift, perhaps a locally made piece of art, or our famous wine colored garnets collected and sold by Wrangell children.
Wrangell’s Museum is located downtown in the Nolan Center on the waterfront. It houses a collection of Tlingit artifacts, the original carved corner posts from Chief Shakes Tribal House, and interactive displays of Wrangell’s history. At low tide, Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park is fun to explore while photographing ancient carvings in rock. Cross the footbridge in the inner harbor to visit Chief Shakes Island and Tribal House surrounded by totems. Watch the fishing boats, yachts and pleasure craft come and go as you walk through history.
Wrangell Island has over 100 miles of forest roads accessing camping areas, view overlooks, fishing streams, and lakes. Natural beauty surrounds Wrangell. The mountains, the islands, the rainforest are at your touch. Visitors have the opportunity to experience it all in Wrangell: glaciers, wildlife, adventure, outdoor activities, and most of all fun.
