Active Adventure

Outdoor enthusiasts will find Haines a paradise of unlimited opportunities for recreation and adventure in all seasons. Hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, skiing, and snowmobiling give way to the added benefit of seeing snow-capped mountain vistas and the area’s abundant wildlife. Go to the edge of your own limits with mountain climbing. Rock and ice-climbing are also available. Mountaineering courses are provided locally. Heli-skiing and snow-boarding have become big events in the winter months with tours being offered through local Haines’ companies.

The winter playground for Haines and our Canadian neighbors is marked with the Alcan 200 Road Rally Event in January. This snow machine race begins at the US/Canadian border to Dezedeash Lake and back on the Haines Highway. An unnamed gathering of US and Canadian snowmobilers occurs over Easter weekend on this same highway near the Chilkat Pass.

Hikers enjoy exploring trails around Haines year-round. Test your levels of endurance with trails leading to mountain tops offering 360 degree views or stroll along inlet waterway beach trails as you take in the surroundings of mountain scenery, bird and sea life and carpets of wildflowers. The brochure Haines Is For Hikers is available at the Haines Visitor Center.
